Description: Much mystery and myth surrounds the history of Aboriginal involvement in the Second South African Anglo-Boer War (hereafter the Boer War) of 1899–1902. Unquestionably some Aboriginal men went to South Africa and played a part in this conflict, but their numbers, identity and background remain sketchy. This chapter considers some of the known and unknown stories and experiences of Aboriginal people during the Boer War. What do we know of the Aboriginal men who went to South Africa? How did they get there and did they get home? In addressing these issues, I acknowledge the groundbreaking work and perseverance of several scholars including Dale Kerwin, Philippa Scarlett, Colin Renshaw, Bill Woolmore and Peter Bakker, all of whom have conducted work over many years trying to piece together the fragmented record and previously missing place of Aboriginal people associated with the largely forgotten war in South Africa.
